Eirich intensive mixer at work inside the Hardheim test hall

Anno 1863 · Hardheim, Odenwald

Stoffkunde.

The science of materials.

For one hundred and sixty three years, Maschinenfabrik Gustav Eirich has answered one question. How does a pile of grains, dust and liquid become a usable material. The answer lives in a single patented principle, and in a hall of test mixers in a small town in the Odenwald.

§ II

Three classes
of apparatus.

The right mixer for every requirement. From the first trial batch on the bench to the twelve cubic metre production unit, the Eirich drawing stays the same. Only the diameter changes.

Laboratory mixers
I. Class

Laboratory mixers

From 0.1 to 5 litres. Trial batches, recipe work, material studies under vacuum or inert gas.

Small scale mixers
II. Class

Small scale mixers

From 40 to 500 litres. Pilot production and development lines, scaled from the same drawing.

Large scale mixers
III. Class

Large scale mixers

From 1,500 to 12,000 litres. Gigafactory throughput, foundry lines, refractory preparation.

§ III · The mixing principle

One pan.
One tool.
Two directions.

An inclined pan turns in one direction. Inside it, an eccentrically positioned rotor turns in the other. Two independent motors, two independent speeds, one encounter at the point where the tool meets the wall of material.

Because the pan carries the charge and the tool does the work, tip speeds reach forty metres per second without bruising the grain. Energy is dialled by the operator. The same drawing resolves from a tenth of a litre to twelve thousand.

The principle was patented in 1903 and has been refined, never replaced, since.
